In addition to teaching music, I am also a professional piano tuner. I do standard (equal-temperament 12-TET) tuning. I have an in-depth understanding of sound physics, string harmonics, and alternate as well as some ancient tunings (not that you'd want that). Rates for a tuning are typically $85-$150 depending on location and if it is severally out of tune. If every key needs to be tuned, that is about 200 adjustments and that can take up to 6 hours. I use high-quality professional equipment and have tuning hammer tips to fit any type of piano, regardless of European or American made. Note: I cannot be held responsible for breaking a string on an older piano as they break just like a guitar string breaks due to age, but I try to be as gentle as possible. I will replace any strings I break for a nominal charge (typically $20) each which includes the cost of the string. They're no fun to replace, but it happens, usually in the last octave where strings are short, thin, and have a large amount of tension on them. I can also do relatively simple repairs such as repairing dropped/non-working keys, action problems, action adjustments, odd noises, crumbling elbows, etc. Let me know the brand/model of your piano and what the symptoms are. I recently replaced all 88 plastic elbows of a Betsy Ross spinet that tend to get brittle and literally crumble due to age. This is about as far as I'll go repair wise. Anything is ok as long as I don't have to remove the entire action, which sometimes involves phsycially removing all the keys. A big job.
